Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the nervous system that affects the brain and spinal cord. It injures the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects nerve cells. The injury slows or blocks messages between the brain and body, leading to the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. These can include:
- Visual disturbances
- Muscle weakness
- Problems with coordination and balance
- Sensations such as numbness, tingling, itching or pins and needles
- Problems with thinking and memory
